was staying in a place called chattai,an apt name for the rooms are made of chattai.
enjoyed the sea,sand,sun,place & people.
our many thanks to the crew in chattai agonda they were so nice,casual,accomodating,friendly which made our days in goa.
we love you all..mr DeCosta,anil,mangesh,ramprasad,shiv,ceril& shobha....missing u'all.

Chattai Yoga

Chattai Yoga is now open!

Located on the hill overlooking Agonda Beach, it is has the best view ever. Being the only beach hut place here, it is absolutely peaceful and pure.

There are 12 huts all facing the sea. All huts have double/twin beds, ensuite bathrooms and sit-outs.

There is a separate Yoga Dome for classes, with a mud-cowdung floor. This also has a fantastic view. It's ideal for yoga or meditation classes or even any kind of creative workshop.

The Bar & Restaurant sits in a sweet spot that enjoys a river view along with the sea view. Besides the regular menu, there is also a special Goan veg section which includes dishes not usually found in any restaurant. These are typical Goan home-style dishes made using locally grown fresh vegetables. They can be also be made 'saatvik' style with less/no garlic, onion or masala.

Access to Chattai Yoga: There are steps cut into the hill on which it is located. During low tide, you can cross the small stream and climb up. During high tide, there is a boat assigned to take guests across. You can also reach Chattai Yoga by road by following the dirt track off the main road in Agonda. Bikes and cars and easily go down this track. Signboards have been placed at crucial junctions.

Chattai, a place so good we went twice.

I could give the standard review of Chattai. Myself and my now wife have stayed their twice, both for 2 weeks. But I don’t want to give the standard review, because I didn’t have the standard time. Infact, the first time we were there, we got engaged. The second time, we got married, in Chattai. So, for the sake of the people that have never been, here’s my standard review of Chattai.

The huts are based at the south end of the beach, which suites me down to the ground. It has the nicer restaurants and is in walking distance from the lively bars. Also, it’s away from Happy Buda, which gets s a bit lively at times. It’s a quick cut through Papillion to the beach, which is cool because the food at Papillion is good and they have WiFi for 100 rups a day.

Now down to Chattai itself. It’s magical to look at. The huts are amazing looking and have been set up so it looks like they climb up the hill. You really get the wow factor from outside looking in. Once in they have a nice little bar area. I’ve never really ordered food from Chattai so I can’t comment on the food but the drink is reasonable and the late night security guard doesn’t mind you sneaking a few bottles when you stagger back from the beach. You need to pay the next morning, obviously. And that’s another thing, it’s secure. I’ve never known any problems or thefts on Palolem, but for piece of mind, it’s nice to know your stuff is secure.

The huts are big selling point here. There are designed like no other huts on the beach, with high ceilings and a roof terrace on most, that are worth the price alone. Sitting on the roof terrace, having a beer last thing at night is the perfect way to round off a night out. Beds are fine and the new fans are luxury compared to most and believe me, you’ll need it!

What sets Chattai apart are the people. You won’t meet more friendly and helpful people on in Goa. This was never more apparent when I asked them if they could help me arrange a surprise wedding for my new wife.

A few months previous to our London wedding, I thought it would be a nice surprise for my new wife to have a Hindu wedding as well. Why? Because we got engaged on the roof terrace of our Chattai hut 6 months previous, so it felt like a full circle thing. I had been quoted huge amounts by some English companies that arranged weddings in Goa, which was way out of my budget. I ask Chattai if they could help me and in true Chattai form, they agreed. It worked out half the price I had been quoted and we could have 8 guests, which the other companies would not allow (for the price). What transpired was amazing. To start with, as a complete surprise to both of us, they had decorated our hut in traditional Indian wedding flowers, with petals on the bed and a bouquet in the corner. Charlie, the manager of Chattai arranged everything, from the henna tattoos for my wife’s hands, to our outfits, to decorating the bar, arranging the holy man and cooking up an unbelievable local feast for us and our friends.

It was an experience of a lifetime and we couldn’t have had it without the people from Chattai. We’ll forever remember our time in Chattai and I’m sure we’ll be back soon.

Fabulous Chattai

I am pleased to say that Chattai Agonda was one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. Its not often I think I will go back somewhere, but Chattai Agonda is somewhere I would definitely consider returning to. The staff and the deserted beach completed my dream holiday. Shakur, Mol, Cyril, De Costa and Amit were so friendly and lovely to be around. The food was superb. Cyril, the night watchman was especially helpful. The laundry service was so good, I made sure all my washing was done BEFORE I left! The hut was lovely - simple but clean. The bed was comfortable - I really cannot find anything to fault at all! Just endless days of sitting on the beach, reading my book, and watching the fishermen and the dolphins. No noisy parties, no annoying neighbours - Agonda for me was pure paradise (but for those of you who are party animals, Palolem, just down the road provides this is spades, but you still have the luxury of peace and quiet in Agonda if you wish). I don't want to write anymore as I don't want Agonda to get "discovered" and become a rowdy party destination! Well done Kumuda and staff for creating such a lovely, relaxing holiday spot. We will be back! (poor you ;-)

Dear Kumuda,

Finally found the time to write in your blog... just 4 weeks ago I sat -very relaxed- on the beautiful Palolem Beach and now the hectic life has returned! But I'm trying hard to hold on to that feeling of relaxation ;-).

My friend Astrid and I arrived in november this year at Chattai after a three weeks journey through the north of India: a beautiful and impressive trip. But arriving in Goa was like arriving in another country. And arriving in Chattai felt like arriving home.
A peaceful place with stylish huts and all the comfort you need. Amazing what you can do with the so called 'chattai', a house constructed of all natural 'carpets'.

Charlie helped us with everything we needed. In Chattai we had no worries, just enjoying our loungebeds on our own terrace and the beach.
The huts are a little walk from the beach, where you have nice restaurants, little shops and many sunbeds. There is also a great supply of massages.

But the relatively stillness of Palolem Beach is something you ouht to treasure, so I'm not advertising too much!

Many thanks for a lovely stay in your beautiful Chattai. I will absolutely return!

I meant to write in sooner, but was still shaking off the lazzzzzzzzzzzzzyyyyyyy stupor that I got into from all the relaxation at Chattai's Agonda Beach Huts!!

The location of Chattai is scenically perfect.

Right on the serene Agonda beach, with a hill flanking the northern side and a long clean shining golden beach on the southern side......

Perfect for quiet relaxation, away from all the hubbub and crowd.....
And if you are really lucky you could glimpse a couple of dolphins in the early morning hours, very near to the beach.....

No No.........that was us.....enjoying in the sea...the Dolphins are lower still..... ;oP

Adding to the calm and peaceful location, it also has one of the most courteous and friendly staff I have ever come across in all my many travels till date.the courtesy extended by the staff has a heartfelt genuineness, which leaves even the 5 star service behind!!!!

Caitano, the manager , & Amit and Soham,who look after the restaurant, are the ideal in customer service, going one step beyond expectations in every way. And that courtesy is extended by other staff as well, the Night security Cybil, always alert and ready to help, The chef, catering to our special requests and serving delicacies, even the room cleaning guy, as soon as he spots us out of our rooms in the mornings, he eagerly comes asking if the rooms need to be cleaned.

The rooms have a really comfy rustic feel, and are well designed and airy......

You will love it if you like natural living........

Listening to the soothing sound of the waves in the dead calm of the night, with your loved one in your embrace, is an experience you gotta get for yourself.....Mere words won't suffice to describe this feeling .....

The whole place has been designed very well, and the ambience is really amazing!!! Have a look for yourself...........

You could relax outside your shack in a personal sit out....

or move out on the beach at a cool and breezy restaurant ...............

or go on further on the beach under the Umbrellas with the comfortable sunbeds..............

& in the evenings you could also ask the helpfull staff to setup a table under the umbrella and have a romantic candle light dinner , with the cool sea breeze and the soothing rhythmic waves setting the mood for a cozy night!!!!!!

The stay there has become one of the most memorable times in our lives, and I wholeheartedly thank the staff and Owners of
Chattai for that!

And yes, We are eagerly planning next year's trip already!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me and my friend visited Goa for a week in April 2008, and ended up staying at Palolem all week.

We found Chattai's website before going, when we were looking up accomodations in Palolem, which we'd heard was a wonderful beach. We were very pleased with how simple it was to arrange everyhing, from payment to transfer from the airport, so that when we arrived jetlagged and tired there was nothing to worry about, just blissful beds ready to collapse in.

That week in Goa turned out one of the best I've had in a long time.
Palolem is a wonderfully beautiful place, and our coco-hut was comfortable and clean, and at just the right distance from the beach - close enough you'd walk there in two minutes, but far enough the music or dogs caused no disturbance when one wanted to sleep.

Charlie and our taxi-driver were also incredibly helpful - I lost my glasses when a huge wave crashed over me in the surf, and everyone at Chattai teamed up to help me get a new pair - even picking the new glasses up and paying with their own money in between to make sure I'd get them the same day. Awsome people!

I'm already planning my next trip to Goa - will probably try out Chattai Agonda this time. If it's anywhere near as beautiful and nice as our stay in Palolem was, I'm bound to come back again and again!

So if you're like we were, sniffing about the Chattai webpage, wonder whether to go - go. Palolem is paradise on earth, and it'll be the best time of your life, promise.

Just to let you know what a great place chattai is to stay!!
When i first arrived i thought i might stay a few days and move on, 4 weeks later and here i am living the good life all thanks to charlie and everyone who have been so helpful and friendly . i would recommend anyone thinking of heading down this way to check out this awsome hideaway! security is brilliant as they know who is staying there and nothing is to much trouble. so thankyou to all of you but please dont let me stay much longer ....have so much to see and do !!!

So we used to have a pact, my husband and I, that if things ever got really bad in the US (like another republican president) we were going to ditch and move to this little beach town in Mexico called Puerto Escondido. Well, someone else thought that was a good idea too. Actually, several someone elses, and last month it was in both the New York Times travel section and in Metropolis magazine. So much for that plan. Luckily, we had just replaced Puerto with Agonda as our 'emergency-break-glass-flee-the-country' city.
We will not be able to drive to Agonda, as we could to Puerto...details, details.

We spent a week in Agonda, and it was pure magic. We intended to stay two days, but upon arrival we met some really cool people, ate some magic fish, and decided to stay as long as we could.
The accommodations are well designed, private, spacious and modern. It is really amazing what they have done with grass and bamboo. The Chattai end of the beach is the quiet end, but it is really all pretty quiet.

The beach is as unspoiled as any you could hope to find in a lifetime; the peace of this village will not last. It is just too perfect. A typical day included yoga down the beach, a three hour breakfast, dolphin and cow watching while sunbathing, a swim in the blue-green endless sea; all punctuated by a cooked to order feast straight from the best BBQ setup around, conveniently located on the beach 20 yards from your hut. Please eat as much cheese tomato garlic naan as you can stomach, you will miss it when you're gone.

If you are smart, you will not tell anyone about this place, or it will end up in the New York Times travel section. Then we will all have to find another spot. So Shush. We will know who said something.

Peace and quiet, at last we found it on Palolem Beach

When you are looking for a quiet place, where you can take plenty of rest, Chattai is the place for you. We fell in love with our shack right at the first moment we lied eyes on it. It shows as a bamboo hut, but it houses all the comfort you need. It has a nice large terrace where you can chill out in the evening or when you just woke up. There is a nice (definitely not small) bathroom with a clean toilet and a shower.
Arriving, we also first met the great people who are working here. They are in one word friendly. Whatever you require, they will surely do their best to help you. Even stuff not related to housing in particular.
Whenever we are paying a visit to Palolem beach again, this will be the first place we'll look into, and so should it be yours!

Thanks kumuda and Ashish for creating wonderful ambience at Chatai, It was a wholesome experience .While Palolim Chatai gave us opportunity to explore the party scene at south Goa , the Agonda Chatai opened a new dimension for holiday, it was a rejuvenator. It was like beautiful dream which we never wanted to end......... By the way I still have the taste of butter Garlic NAAN.

ho-ooh-ope it stays that way. Ideal for the stressed and the distressed :))).

It was such a pleasure sitting in the large comfortable chairs under the thatched roof restaurant , looking out at the sea, the distant fishing boats. The creek at the end of the beach the sea, the dolphins, the forest covered hills that cradle the beach all added to my general feeling of well being.

And the food was brill . Will the red snapper in garlic-chilli -paste be available if i go later in the year? what about the tandoori mustard pomphret? the egg bhurji with toast, the squid, prawns, butter naans.. . yumeee.
Lurrrrved it all.

All the mad for partying crowd, do go away to Palolem . Its got all the raves and beach parties. Its further up the road. Y'all ask Kumuda about Chattai Palolem.

Just wanted to say thanks to all at Chattai Agonda for allowing us to achieve complete chill over Christmas & New Year.

I am almost loathe to post here as Agonda is perhaps Goa's best kept secret - a beach with seemingly more cows than people. Life was about about swimming in the sea, sunbathing on the pristine beach or chilling out with a Kingfisher under the huge canopy. I should also mention the incredible tandoor which produced mouth-watering daily treats of fresh fish.

This is a chilled-out spot but if you want to taste a little madness then Palolem is only 10kms away by auto. Easy.

Tell your friends, but don't tell everyone!

We had the honour to be the first guests at Chattai Agonda and can only say one thing: go there (but not too many of you please)! It's a wonderful place at a wonderful beach. Not too crowded, delicious food, superb view to the beach and the sunset, very nice and beautiful huts, Indian paradise! We really felt very welcome. We spent Christmas and New Year at Chattai and couldn't have wished for a better place to stay in Goa. Thanks to all the crew of Chattai Agonda!

Here's another place to escape to!

This season there will be a Chattai on Agonda Beach as well!

Agonda is a beautiful, extremely peaceful beach about 15 minutes from Palolem by bike. At one end a small river joins the sea. At the other end, over a hill is the stunning 'Butterfly Island' - a secluded cove that is accessible only by boat.

Agonda is not as 'action-packed' as Palolem is these days. There are fewer beach huts, shacks and restaurants. It's for someone who wants to just unwind and vegetate!

Location: Nestled amidst over a hundred coconut trees, Chattai is directly on the beach and is only about 20 - 30 metres from the sea! (In the picture the man and dog are standing at the edge of Chattai) It's about a minute or two from the spot where the river joins the sea.

Cottages: Single-level with sit-outs, attached bathrooms (cold shower, western toilet), double beds and fans. There is also a bar and restaurant. (Sorry, no pictures as yet!)

The rates are:

Dec 1 - 21: Rs.1000

Dec 22 - Jan 4: Rs. 2000

Jan 5 - Feb: Rs.1000

March - May 15: Rs.600

There's a 15% discounts for stays of 5 days and above - except between Dec 21- Jan 4.

Just got back after 3 weeks in Goa, spent 15 nights at Chattai Beach Huts. Avinash & Damur were brilliant. Nothing was too much for them. Thanks to Avinash's help i managed to see and do so much more. He really went out of his way to ensure i got the best out of my stay and was the source of so much knowledge and information. The huts were lovely, spacious and well constructed. The location of Chattai is ideal, away from the noise (except for Dancing Shiva who managed to bend the rules on occasion but even that was bearable) yet close enough to the beach. Good coffee and the sound of Damur going about his kitchen business singing with a beautiful smile on his face was a great way to start the day. Some good shacks on the beach although i bet its a lot more crowded at the height of season. For me it was ideal and i shant be returning to the neon of North Goa. Try it and see .... and have a taste of the Sexy Dal Fry.

I have just arrived home from my holiday staying in chattai and I have to tell you how wonderful it was. We originally booked for only one night so we could try some other accommodation during our stay, but as soon as we arrived I fell in love with it! The setting just off from the beach makes it feel a safe and secluded place, and it's so beautiful we ended up staying for 7 nights!

The shacks are better than I could wish for, with a private terrace decorated with white drapes, and electric fans provided to keep you cool, (and keep moskitos away). large bathroom and bedroom, It was a real pleasure to stay there. The staff were so friendly and made it a completely relaxing holiday, I will definately come back. Thankyou!

New Year is probably the worst time to travel. New Year is probably also the one time you must travel. It is this duality, that drives millions to Goa every year. We were two of that million. Stuck on the airport for hours because of the fog and the delayed flights, we reached Goa tired and a little out of the New Year spirit. But then Chttai happened. Amidst the quintessential Goan village setting, Chattai was home within seconds. We arrived days after our reservations, but inspite of the heavy demand, they were nice enough to keep our bookings. What's more, they never charged us for the days we had to cancel because of our delayed flights.

That was just the start. The owners are two of the most wondeful people you will ever meet. And the staff is just as nice. Avinesh and Charlie did everything to make us feel at home. Warm and welcoming, they treated us like family. From booking a car for us to arranging for a bike, from booking us on a Dolphin tour to making sure we get up on time to spot them, they made sure we have the most memorable trip ever.

We spotted atleast 50 dolphins and i give all the credit to Avinesh. After trying for two days, he made sure we get up on time on our last day there. He literally banged our hut down, trying to wake us up. Gave us a hurried glas of juice and promised to keep a massive breakfast ready when we get back. Just so we would get on the boat before the sun came up. He even made a deal for us with boat man to show us some lesser known, secret islands. On emerald green waters, we expored some of the most beautiful places.

There are some things that get stuck in your mind, almost like a photograph. One such picture in my head is of a morning, when i sat nursing my mug of coffee. A rooster pecked happily away near me and some piglets played in the courtyard. I will never forget that scene. I never felt more at peace or more in touch with nature. There is just something about waking up to a rooster call. Something so tranquil and almost hypnotising about watching tiny pigs go about their business. Something so assuring about friendly dogs accompanying you on a walk through the village flea market. It's almost romantic.

What I loved most about it was the ambience. And the washroom. It was like showering in the open. With a portion of the washroom having no ceiling for natural lighting and fresh air, the experience was amazing. Cold water mingled with sea breaze to create quite a novel bath experience. They were nice enough to provide you with hot water if you requested for it, but it was cold showers all the way for me.

The room was cozy with a snug little bed that was perfect for two. It had a functional mosquito net (there weren't many mosquitoes that time of the year though) which gave the room such a romantic feel. The huts are made of Chattai as the name suggests. In fact, everything about the place is au Naturale. Just makes you feel healthier.

We were living in a split level cottage with a little terrace sit out on the top. With white curtains to allow just enough privacy, we would sit late into the night listening to the waves crash againts the shore and watching the candlelight cast a warm, mellow glow on everything. In the distance, you could hear music. Assuring you that there was still some place you could party at. If you'd rather. The terrace was also perfect to enjoy a morning smoke, as we planned out the rest of our day. Which was always easy enough.

We'd wake up to a leisurely coffee and massive breakfast, walk over to the beach two steps away and spend the rest of the day vegetating at one of the several beach shacks. Chattai is at the quiet end of Palolem, near some of the best shacks and a lovely restaurant at a rock jutting into the sea. Very conveniently located to stumble into bed after getting smashed out of your head. And still far enough to provide you your privacy and keep you from having banging music spoil it, if you have plans for a quite night. What's more, it ensures that only guests come to that area. Which means, it's not a thorough fare. There's a guard that keeps watch at night. Not that there is anything to be worried about. But it's just nicer to know that people who have no business there are not lurking around in the still of the night.

We rented a bike which Charlie arranged for us. Petrol pumps are few and far between in Goa. But they have a rather innovative solution to it. A few meters from Chattai is a little grocery store that also stores petrol. They have Bilseri bottles full of fuel that you can just buy. We went into town one day to look for an ATM. That's about all we left the beach for. Everything else was available right there.

Unfortunately during our stay, I managed to catch a cold. It got so bad one night that I could hardly lay down. They were so comforting, so sweet. They made me Ginger and Honey Tea, in the middle of the night. As I sat sipping it in the open air restaurant, just outside my hut, they kept me company, telling us stories about locals and places that we must visit. Not for a moment did they let me feel sorry for myself. Instead, they pampered me back to health. That was one of my nicest experiences of staying at Chattai.

They have many games and books to keep you company. I played table tennis after years. But mostly I just realxed. And soaked in the ambience. Chattai will be one of my best finds in Goa. The trip ended way too soon. And we came back with huge withdrwal syptoms. But I am going back soon. Once you get a taste of it, it's hard not to.

Fun Days at Chattai

Hi there

We - two girls, a guy and a 6 month old baby - had a wonderful, relaxing stay at Chattai thanks to Avinash and Charlie. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. Baby Ari was pampered and spoiled. As were we. Its a beautifully done place. Simple but clean and relaxing. We loved our room with the terrace on top.

Only problem really were the mosquitoes but I don't really know what you guys can do to erradicate them!

Thanks for a truly relaxing experience.

Hi there Chattai guests!

Firstly, thanks so much for choosing to stay with us at Chattai! We really appreciate your business. We would love to have your comments, so we've created this online guest book just for you!

Chattai has now been running for about 7 months in total. We're still the 'newcomers' around here - but we're fast getting the hang of things. It's been a great learning experience for us - especially meeting people from around the world from different professions. We've made a lot of friends and had tonnes of fun! Thanks again!

Some of our guests have mailed me their feedback, which till now, has been mostly positive! (Thank God!)We've also received some constructive criticism, which we've learned from and tried to make amends.

I know that the approach to Chattai remains a sore point!! It hasn't been easy co-existing with somewhat messy neighbors and being near a high-tide creek that greets us with a deluge of plastic bottles and bags every day! Still, we keep cleaning and sanitizing the area around us. We've been talking to like-minded resort owners to make a concerted effort to clean up the area. Not an easy process, let me tell you!

We've planted several trees in our compound when we opened so we should become suitably 'shady' in the near future and look a lot greener.

Things that are a bit out of our control are: our geographical location and the fact that we're not directly on the beach, the friendly pigs that wander around the entire village, the early morning wake-up (or is it mating?!) calls of the local doggies and the never-ending party music at the Bridge & Tunnel (how they get to play such loud music beyond 11 PM is anybody's guess!).
